Abstract
Reading is the least popular activity in Secondary Students, which leads to the low scores on their Bahasa test. One way that can be used to improve the reading capabilities is the use of instrumental music. This research is aimed at assessing and finding out the differences in reading capability among the 7th grades by providing them with rock and classical instrumental music. The music is derived from Mozart’s Symphony No. 25 that assessed by means of the Content Validity Index (CVI) from three subject matter experts (p=0,866; 0,67; p>0,05). The measuring tool that used in this research comes in the form of 20 multiple choice questions, which represent the Competency Standard for 7th grade students that assessed the reliability by the means of Kuder Richardson-20 (p=0,958; near 1,00). In this research, there are 68 students, aged 12-14, divided into three groups, one sits the test with classical music, another with rock music, and the other one without any music on. From this research, it shows that there were differences in reading capability among the 7th grades (p=0,001; p<0,05). The group with rock music is on the lowest score. It might stem from the music element that generating some distortion and posing a reverse effect on someone’s cognitive process. It is advisable for parents and teachers to use classical instrumental music to improve students’ reading capabilities. The next research will hopefully use more subjects, music genres, and conduct another experiment on the subjects with headphones on.
