HUBUNGAN KONSEP DIRI DAN HARGA DIRI TERHADAP KECENDERUNGAN BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER PADA REMAJA PUTRI PELANGGAN KLINIK KECANTIKAN
Abstract
Female teenagers (16-18 years) are susceptible to experience body
dysmorphic disorder. According to Phillips (1991), one of the characteristics of
individuals with body dysmorphic disorder is their tremendous efforts to make
their appearance attractive. Nowadays, many techniques can be done to improve
their appearance, such as beauty treatments at a beauty clinic. According to
Phillips (in Media Indonesia, 2010) the majority of individuals with body
dysmorphic disorder believe that their lack of appearance can only be improved
through beauty treatments in beauty clinics. Individual with low self-concept and
low self-esteem tend to feel some dissatisfactions with their physical appearance
and this dissatisfaction can lead to the tendency of body dysmorphic disorder
(Papasit, 2012). The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship of selfconcept
and self-esteem toward the tendency of body dysmorphic disorder in
female teenagers as beauty clinic customers in Surabaya. This quantitative
research is conducted by collecting data media using questionnaires. Subjects
were 105 senior high school X girls students in Surabaya. The research
instrument is divided into three types namely scale body dysmorphic disorder
scale based on the characteristics of body dysmorphic disorder by Phillips
(1991), self-concept scale adapted from the Tennessee Self Concept Scale (Fitts,
in Jamaludin et al., 2009), self-esteem scale adapted from the Self-Perception for
Adolescents (Harter, 2012). Reliability coefficients of body dysmorphic disorder,
Tennessee Self Concept Scale and the Self-Perception for Adolescents are
respectively 0.923, 0.947, 0.923. Result shows that there is a significant negative
correlation between self-concept and self-esteem to the tendency of body
dysmorphic disorder (p <0.05). Body dysmorphic disorder could be reduced by
improving self-concept and self-esteem. Self-concept and self-esteem could be
enhanced by developing their talents that female teenagers can become more
confident. Supports from teachers and the community can reduce the tendency of
body dysmorphic disorder in female teenagers.
