Abstract
Self-confidence is an essential attitude for a first-year college student. Self-confidence is influenced by various factors, such as peer attachment and emotional intelligence. The purpose of this study is to understand the influence of peer attachment and emotional intelligence to self-confidence in first-year college student at private universities in Surabaya. This quantitative research use questionnaires to collect data. Subjects in this study were 122 students from several of private universities in Surabaya, using purposive sampling. Three scales are used to collect data (self-confidence, peer attachment, and emotional intelligence scale). The reliability level of self-confidence, peer attachment, and emotional intelligence scale respectively 0.817; 0,939; 0.913. The results showed that peer attachment has its influence towards self-confidence in the amount of 13.7% and emotional intelligence affect the self-confidence in the amount of 40.7%. Peer attachment and emotional intelligence are not jointly affect self-confidence. Students are expected to be able to boost self-confidence by increasing the level of peer attachment and emotional intelligence. Parents can use rewards method also teaches some habits that effective on increasing adolescent’s emotional intelligence from an early age. The university may hold a public class and create care group program that will form student’s personality and emotional intelligence. Students can improve their quality of peers attachment by improving affection’s quality of their relationship with peers.
